7th December 2014 – Winwick Athletic Wildcats v Seneley & Garswood Hawks

Garswood travelled to Winwick for their early morning kick-off and freezing cold wet and windy weather casted a slight doubt whether the fixture would be played.

However after turning up at Daten Sports Club, it was obvious that not many games would be called off on a pitch like this, a superb surface, definitely one of the best in the league.

The visitors had a couple of their lads carrying injuries; it always gives the lads a boost when these players turn up to show their support for their team mates and is greatly appreciated by us all.

It was Garswood who got into their rhythm early on, playing some superb one and two touch stuff in the opening five minutes wasting a couple of clear opportunities to gain the initiative.

The deadlock was broken midway through the half by forward Jay Herring who coolly side footed home a left wing cross with his right foot to give the visitors a deserved lead. Despite still creating chances going forward, Garswood lost their shape and discipline and Winwick looked menacing every time they came at our back line, indeed only keeper Dan Finney prevented the hosts from drawing level just before the break with a couple of fine stops.

Two subs were introduced at half time and the coaches made it clear that some of the performances in the first half were not up to standard. Thankfully the message was taken on board and ten minutes in Ryan Eden swung in a corner with his right foot which evaded everyone in the box and flew into the top corner.

Garswood continued to press forward and created several chances to add to their lead before Alexi Mellor broke free and fired home with a superb finish to put Garswood 3-0 up.

Winwick grabbed a consolation goal in the last minute when a defender (you know who you are, but will remain nameless), sliced through his own goal when attempting to clear the ball.

A really tough game against good opposition, Winwick will surprise a few teams on their own patch this season and never let their heads drop. A special mention must go to Darren Helm (one of the Winwick parents), who refereed the match as no ref was available. He put as good a performance as any referee that we have had all season.

30th November 2014 – Seneley & Garswood Hawks v Golborne

The hosts welcomed their local neighbours to Birch Grove for an early afternoon kick-off as both sides looked to keep up their impressive starts to the season.

Garswood deployed a 3-5-2 formation and looked to get on the front foot from the off but it was evident in the first few minutes that both sides were closely matched and the battle in midfield would determine which team came out on top.

Garswood suffered a blow early on as midfield maestro Ollie Kennedy went down when taking a free kick with no one near him.

There was obvious concern with all of the squad as Ollie had suffered a similar injury a few seasons previous but he bravely made his way off for some further treatment as Ethan Apter took his place.

Both sides had a couple of chances to break the deadlock but as the half time whistle went the game remained goalless.

The customary three subs were introduced in the second half and the instruction to the lads was to take the game to their opponents and the hosts started with renewed vigour.

Soon after the restart, Jay Herring guided a fabulous header into the top corner after a fine cross from Ryan Eden on the left wing and it looked like Garswood were taking home the 3 points.

Chances followed in quick succession when firstly Matty Marsh thumped a shot against the crossbar after a mazy run down the right hand channel before he turned provider when he glanced on a cross from Jay Herring into the path of Owen Roberts who could only head over the bar from 5 yards out when unmarked.

A one goal margin was always dangerous against decent opposition and this proved the case when with ten minutes left Golborne equalised with a fine finish. Both sides had half chances to win this entertaining affair, but honours were shared at the final whistle.
